Academics

CURRICULUM

Daily schedules at OLI include instruction in Religion, English, Language Arts, Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, and French (8th). The time allocated for instruction in each of these areas is determined by the needs of the students and adheres to guidelines provided by the Louisiana State Board of Education, Bulletin 741.

TESTING

Classroom assessments include lesson quizzes, chapter tests, unit tests, written response and essays, benchmark assessments, and performance assessments using rubrics. Formal Assessments include STAR Math & Reading bi-annually and TerraNova (3rd-8th) in the Spring. Eighth graders also take a religion assessment.

STAFF

All regular teachers, the administrator, and counselor are certified or state-approved for their area of service. Teacher aides, librarian, office staff, and other personnel are hired and placed based on need and experience. The school also employs a Coordinator of Religious Education, as well as a Development Director for public relations.

TECHNOLOGY

Every classroom has an interactive white board, document camera, projection system, sound amplification system, and 2-5 computers or iPads. Students have access to two computer labs, which house 30 computers each. The computer lab also contains a 3-D printer. The Library is fully automated, with an online catalog and over 25 iPads. Junior High students (5th-8th) also have access to 1:1 technology.

SUPPORT SERVICES

OLI employs teacher’s aides as necessary. We currently have aides in Pre-K 3, Pre-K4, Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade, and a shared aide between Third and Fourth grades. We also have a part-time counselor who provides anti-bullying lessons, life skills, and academic, social, and emotional support.

Through Jeff Davis Parish School Board, we also provide resource and speech services. Using Title I funds, we’re able to employ three dedicated Interventionists: K-2nd, 3rd - 5th, and 6th - 8th.

ENRICHMENT

Regular classroom instruction is enhanced with enrichment periods. Daily enrichment classes are assigned to all students at all grade levels. Enrichment includes: Physical Education and Art Appreciation/Instruction for Pre-K 3 through 8th grade, Computer Literacy for Kindergarten through 8th grade, and Library for Pre-K 3 through 5th grade.
